From Secret Swimming Spots to Local Eats: Clayton’s Favourite Places on Magnetic Island

For Clayton’s five-year anniversary as skipper aboard Pilgrim, we asked him to share his favourite spots on Magnetic Island. From secret swimming holes and scenic walking tracks to go-to local eats and sunset hideaways, Clayton takes us on a personal tour of the places he loves to visit when he’s not behind the wheel.

Embracing the Island Time Lifestyle on Magnetic Island

I love the “Island Time” lifestyle on Magnetic Island, a slower, more relaxed pace of life with a strong connection to nature, community, and personal well-being. Living and working here has taught me to truly appreciate the present moment.

The island’s landscapes—a mix of granite boulders, hoop pines, sandy beaches, coral reefs, and National Park trails—make it easy to appreciate the present. On my days off, I stretch my legs on tracks like Horseshoe Bay to Radical, the Forts Walk, or Horseshoe Bay to Nelly.

Sun-soaked afternoons on the beach at Horseshoe Bay with my wife Julie are some of my favourites. We love throwing a line in, watching one of our spectacular sunsets, and enjoying nibbles. Julie’s family has a 94-year association with the island, and I love hearing her stories from when she was a child, before it became a tourist destination. I often share some of that history with our guests.

When family or friends visit, we might explore the City of Adelaide at low tide or go snorkelling at Florence Bay. I also like to get out on our twin paddle ski, which I’ve fitted with motors and rod holders—smarter, not harder!

Giving Back

“Being a volunteer rural firefighter and fire warden with the Horseshoe Bay Rural Fire Brigade brings me immense pride. Protecting our community and environment is rewarding.”

Living in this community has helped define who I am. Magnetic Island is woven into my personal narrative—from childhood holidays, my first business, ending my first circumnavigation of Australia, meeting my wife on our first night ashore, starting Arcadia Store and Butlers Pantry, to being a skipper on Pilgrim Magnetic Island for the last five years. Every day, I get to share the island’s wondrous beauty—the place I call home.

My Favourite Island Spots

Barefoot Art Food & Wine, Horseshoe Bay
Our first date was here 19 years ago. We celebrate it every year with the same meal—reef and beef—and a bottle of Pepperjack Shiraz.

White Lady Bay
Where I married my lovely “wench” nearly five years ago. We mark the day annually with a meal at Saltwater and a bottle (or two) of Croser Champagne.

Huntingfield Bay
One of the island’s best waterfalls. During the season, I take guests here on Pilgrim Adventures. Sitting in the rock pools with that view feels like being anywhere in the world.

Horseshoe Bay Beach
The western end is perfect for a swim, then drying off against the giant granite boulders.

Horseshoe Bay Fish n Chips
A classic for lunch. Their BLT with tartare is unbeatable.

Magnetic Island is as much or as little as you want it to be - so get out and explore our amazing backyard - you won't be disappointed.
