Magnetic Island Race Week: Sail & Spectate with Pilgrim
This August, Race Week isn’t just about competition—it’s your invitation to sail, relax, and soak up the thrill in style.
Pilgrim’s Racing Roots & America’s Cup Connection
Pilgrim was built with a bold vision: to be both fast and elegant. Designed by Scott Kaufman and crafted in inland NSW, she was finished in Fremantle by SE Ward & Co — the same team behind Australia II, the 1983 America’s Cup winner.
Her elliptical keel? Cast from melted-down lead from Kookaburra III, the Australia II chase boat. That racing DNA paid off: Pilgrim won Division 1 at Magnetic Island Race Week in 2015. A classic yacht with a competitive streak — and a story to match.
Why Magnetic Island Race Week is So Special
Held annually in late August (29 Aug–4 Sept 2025), SeaLink Magnetic Island Race Week marks the final stop in the northern Queensland regatta circuit — following the prestigious Hamilton Island and Airlie Beach Race Weeks.
Featuring competitive monohull and multihull divisions, it’s loved for its spectacular North Queensland setting: clear tropical waters, relaxed island atmosphere, and (occasionally) playful light breezes in the afternoons.
Unlike the bigger regattas, Maggie Island’s Race Week pairs serious sailing with a sociable, down-to-earth vibe. The marina buzzes with post-race energy, and spectators can soak up the action both onshore and offshore — with a drink in hand, or better yet, from the water itself.
Watch It from the Water — Aboard Pilgrim
Pilgrim won Magnetic Island Race Week in 2015 — but these days, she’s all about laid-back luxury. During Race Week, you can hop aboard our Lunchtime Sailing Cruise for a totally different kind of sailing experience.
Settle into soft beanbags, graze on a gourmet lunch, and soak up the island views. Depending on the day’s course, you may even catch glimpses of the racing action from a quieter, more comfortable vantage point.
Live Race Commentary — Aboard Sandy
For a front-row seat to the action, jump aboard Sandy — our fast, private RIB skippered by two-time Sydney to Hobart sailor (and Pilgrim's owner) Paul. With live commentary from someone who’s raced in Magnetic Island Race Week and beyond, you’ll gain insider insights as you cruise past the competition.
Between watching the racing, you’ll explore secluded bays, visit hidden beaches, and if you’re lucky — spot whales playing offshore. It’s the ultimate combination of thrill, chill, and local knowledge.
See the Racing from Land and Sea
Looking for a different way to experience Race Week? Join our Trek & Sail on Saturday 30 August — a perfect blend of coastal hiking and barefoot luxury on the water.
Spot colourful race yachts from coastal lookouts, then board Pilgrim for a relaxing sail and gourmet lunch in a secluded bay. The perfect Saturday escape — no racing required.
The Community & Adventure Essence
Pilgrim’s presence during Race Week isn’t just about sailing or spectating. It honours a legacy rooted in community, competition, and celebration. Race Week isn’t just attended by homegrown talent—it draws Olympians, offshore pros, and interstate visitors all seeking the same mix of thrill and tropical escape.
It’s a week where adrenaline meets ambiance: yachts racing, crews cheering ashore, and guests sipping organic wine as the day winds down.
